I was born in a remote village in Sri Lanka, received education in the University of Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka Law College and practiced as an Attorney-at-law. Later I joined and worked in the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for 23 years. I have served as UNHCR Chief of Mission and has experienced conflicts in the Philippines, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. I was an institutional recipient of Noble Peace Price in 1981 when the UNHCR received it.

After I retired from UNHCR (Geneva),and I returned to my country of birth, Sri Lanka to devote my time to four specific fields:

Legal Aid to the Poor
Protection for the Victims of Crime
Elders Program
Migrant Workers
Abused Women and Children Rights.

My current project is to restore the Mediation of Disputes culture combined with micro financing at grass root level, in impoverished parts of Sri Lanka.
